Kahu

Privacy policy

Last updated: 5 September 2026

Kahu is a dog care app. It keeps a record of your dog's routine and health — meals, walks, medications, symptoms, weight, photos — so you have it when you need it.

This policy describes what happens to that record.

The short version

If you do not create an account

Kahu is fully functional signed out. Your dog's record — the timeline, the tasks, the photos — stays on your phone. We have no account for you and no copy of your record.

Photos you take or attach stay on the device. If you allow it, Kahu also saves a copy to your phone's own photo library, where you can find it in Photos alongside your other pictures; that copy is yours and is never uploaded by us.

One thing does leave your phone, whether or not you have an account: an app-update check. Kahu asks our update service whether a newer version of the app is available each time you open it. That request carries your device's IP address and which build of Kahu you are running. It does not carry your dog's record or anything in it. The service is Expo, who provide app delivery for us.

If you create an account

An account exists for backup and for sharing a dog with another person. Creating one is your choice, and signing out later leaves everything on the phone.

How you sign in. With Apple, with Google, or with an email address and password. We receive an account identifier and an email address from whichever you choose. If you use Sign in with Apple and choose Hide My Email, we receive Apple's private relay address and never your real one.

What is backed up. The record the app holds for each of your dogs:

Your dog's profile name, breed, birthday, sex, weight, whether she is spayed or neutered, her daily calorie target, her home time zone, the traits and goals you picked during setup, which illustrated avatar you chose, and how you have arranged your quick-log buttons
Tasks and their schedules what you have asked Kahu to remind you about
Task occurrences each due day and whether it was done, skipped, or left open
Logged events meals, walks, medications, symptoms, weigh-ins, and the notes and details you attach to them
Photos attached to events the image files themselves
Food products and food trials the foods you record and the trials you run
Away windows the date ranges you mark yourself away
Household membership who a dog is shared with

Her photo is the exception: the picture file itself stays on your phone and is not uploaded today, though the record notes that you set one.

Where it is stored. On servers operated by Supabase, our hosting provider, who process this data on our behalf and do not use it for their own purposes. Photos are held in a private storage area that is not publicly reachable and is readable only by you and the people you have shared that dog with.

How it is protected. In transit by TLS. Access is enforced per-dog at the database level, so you can reach a dog's record only while you are a member of its household.

Sharing a dog with someone

If you invite someone into a dog's household, they can see and add to that dog's record — that is what sharing is for. They see entries you make, and you see theirs.

They keep their copy if you leave or delete your account. A shared record does not belong to one person, and removing yourself does not remove the dog's history from the people still caring for it. What goes with you is your name from the membership; what stays is the record itself.

What we do NOT do

Crash reports

Kahu contains no crash-reporting or diagnostics software of its own. If the app crashes, we see only what Apple already collects for every app on your iPhone, and only if you have chosen to share it.

That sharing is yours to control, and it is not ours to ask for: Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements on your iPhone. If it is off, we receive nothing. If it is on, Apple gives us a technical description of the failure — where in the code it happened, the iOS version, the device model. It never contains your dog's record, your notes, your photos or your health history, because Apple builds those reports and the app plays no part in it.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account from inside Kahu — Settings, then Delete account.

Changes

If this policy changes materially we will update this page and the date at the top. The app does not notify you of changes, so if this matters to you, this page is the place to check.
